This is Belfast's oldest Library, and has been lending books to the citizens of Belfast since 1788. The Linen Hall Library is one of the oldest surviving subscription libraries in the United Kingdom. It specialises in Irish Politics and culture and is accessible to all members of the public.
It is renowned for its unparalleled Irish and Local Studies Collection, ranging from comprehensive holdings of Early Belfast and Ulster printed books to the 250,000 items in the NI Political Collection, the definitive archive of the recent troubles.
Note: The Library is closed on all public holidays and for one week in July.
Access:
Wheelchairs - Full disabled access and facilities (via Fountain Street entrance).
Guide Dogs - Guide Dogs and Hearing Dogs for deaf people are welcome.
Loop System - A loop induction system is available in the Performance Area on Level 3.
Children
We actively welcome children and for our young readers we provide a reading space on Level 2 with picture books, easy readers and jigsaws to entertain while the rest of the family browse for books. The Library does not operate a silence policy in this area.
